Yesterday’s How To Find A Profitable Niche got me thinking again about how I can demonstrate to you in a real world example of what will make you money today! I don’t want to give you theory about how to make money from your web site, I want to tell you how it can actually be done right now. So here’s a method I’ve used recently with a lot of success, just not with this particular topic. I am sure this can make money if done right now.

A search on Technorati shows that Paris Hilton is still in the top 10 searches today:

Now that we know people love searching for Paris, lets think of some ways to monetize a niche site based on this. Adsense with some affiliates sprinkled in is an easy way to go.

Find Long-Tail Keywords

It’s time to find some keywords. A great free tool is the Overture Keyword Tool.  When I type in “Paris Hilton”, a ton of results come up (over 1.6 million searches for paris hilton last month alone). We prefer long tail keywords (3+ words), so find the top 5 long tail keywords and write them down. They are: “paris hilton and britney spears”, “paris hilton photo”, “paris hilton video”, etc. (Note: I left out the sexual keywords but you can use those too if you so choose ;) ).  Now create the content for your page and be sure to include the top 5 long tail keywords you found.

Why Should People Go To Your Site?

This is going to be the key to attracting people to your site - you need to give them something for free! Ready?

There are thousands of free programs available for download on the web. Download.com is one of my favorites. Type in Paris Hilton and see what comes up:

Tons of stuff comes up - great! Find the most appealing free download product and offer it for free on your web site! This is what will appeal to the thousands of people who are interested in Paris and come to your site.

Lastly, blend and insert your adsense ads very well and this is a money maker. You can take an extra step and sprinkle in ringtone and dating affiliate offers through banners on the site. The research for such a site took me 20 minutes and if I use an existing template I own it would take another 2 hours to create the site. Then 30 minutes to insert and blend the ads. Within 3 hours you can have the site up and running and making money! :)

I have not seen this money making method exposed on other blogs and you’d probably have to buy one of those $197 get rich quick scam ebooks to get an idea like this, so take advantage of it and find a creative way to implement it. I’m not saying you have to do this with the Paris Hilton example I gave (I’d actually prefer you not use Paris because there are better money makers out there), but there are thousands of other ways to take this idea and make money with it. Good luck and if you do use it to make money, come back and let us know how it’s doing :)

This is why I have the Pokemon section on my site. Nothing screams “long tail” like ten years of video game history.

Overture lists a count of over 300K for Pokemon.

In fact, I get a major source of revenue from my Pokemon articles and I’m not talking about AdSense!

Believe it or not, I am also getting a good amount of traffic from Yahoo Answers! It seems some of the kids out there are putting links to my blog articles up as answers for common Pokemon questions.

See, I never thought of something like this, didn’t know it was so easy.

Thanks for the advice, I’ll probably put it to the test in the upcoming months.

I blogged about Ms Hilton too this morning! Well, me and thousands of other bloggers, I guess. AdSense is now displaying a “Paris Hilton Ringtones’ ad on that page. I’m too scared to investigate what a Paris Hilton ringtone sounds like.

It’s a good idea this. May make a static site for one of my spare domains and see what I can do.

Good post!

Jane your on point. I recently picked up some good domains based on the key word searches.

I never however thought about doing the free download option but I think you have hit the money again.

Can we extend the day to 25 hours? Need some extra time…. :0)

Can it be that easy? Jane, how much to start a site like this to get it going? Can you break it down into a budget?

Just curious. That seems to be the only missing information.

Starting a site like this could cost as little as $8.95 for the domain you purchase. I think GoDaddy is still having their 99 cent .info sale going on, but I do prefer .com’s over .info’s.

So really the only budget you need is $8.95 for the domain + $5-6 for hosting. Tons of free marketing methods.

To Jane-

Thanks for clarifying and confirming the costs involved.

I guess the next thing you would suggest is to create and test many sites to see which work (make money), or if a site is cash positive and requires little maintenance…just let it roll.

One additional question. Do you just use a Wordpress theme when you create these sites, or do you use some other kind of website template?

Thanks again Jane.

I use both WP and a few templates I have. It really just depends on the type of site you are creating. WP is probably the easiest and fastest way to create a site.

Jane,

May I ask you why do you prefer .com over .info ?
- Is it true that a .com site ranks better than a .info site ?

Excelent post !

How do you make the free offer, and how do you set it up…with an auto responder?

Thanks

Auto responders work well if you are setting up hundreds of sites. If you have 10 or less, I prefer to do some of the work manually because it creates a personal touch. You miss out on that with automating certain things.

Hey Jane, I found your blog via John chow.

Interesting how you picked Paris Hilton, I noticed how popular she was two years ago, and now when you search for her name, im on the first page of google . Long tail is good, short tail is even better.

Ofcourse the CPC is not great, but with big traffic it doesn’t really matter.

after identifying a profitable niche people can also use ‘hittail’ which helps to increase your site’s search engine traffic by telling you what long tail keywords to use in your articles. Then all one has to do is write a post using the suggested keywords and watch your search ranking improve for that term.

Wordtracker is a good tool for gathering longtail keywords, but you have to pay for it…. if you are setting up a new site it is probably worth it as it shows keyword competition, i.e. measures number of searches against the number of competing sites to give a metric showing which are the best keywords to target.

The only problem is you get a lot of keywords and its not always that easy to work them into post titles, which is really where you need them….

I think three hours is a bit ambitious if you are going to write content…

I have a couple of sites like this and they do earn, unlike my sitelogic blog, which although more popular does not earn any money…

At the moment I am wondering whether to revisit an existing site and develop it further or start a couple of new one’s…..

FYI, Overture Keyword Tool is now useless and dated… Yahoo has quit supporting it was last updated last January…. 6-months ago!

Those 1.6m searches for ‘Paris Hilton’ you give in the example are from Searches done in January 2007.
